"Similar You'll Never See Me Once again" is a song by American vocaliser and songwriter Alicia Keys from her 3rd studio album, As I Am (2007). Written and produced by Keys and Kerry Brothers Jr., it was released in Nov 2007 equally the album's second unmarried. The vocal was first heard on Oct 25, 2007, on Atlanta's V103 WVEE radio station.

The unmarried peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Keys' second consecutive R&B chart-topper, remaining atop the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs nautical chart for seven weeks and dislodging previous single "No One" from the top position. In 2008, the song won two NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Music Video and Outstanding Vocal, and an ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Award for Superlative R&B/Hip-Hop Song.[1]

Composition [edit]

"Similar You'll Never Run across Me Once again" was written and produced by Keys and Kerry Brothers Jr. Keys explained to MTV News that the song is "nigh living every moment as if information technology's your final. Because if it'south our last time to say, 'I love you,' then let it exist that nosotros didn't forget that."[2]

Critical reception [edit]

The song received critical acclamation. Nate Chinem from New York Times wrote that the song is "a distant cousin to Prince's 'Regal Rain'."[3] J. Freedom du Lac from Washington Mail agreed, writing that "the sexy, Prince-ly rail is by far the anthology's all-time runway.[4] Rodney Dugue from Spin wrote that the song is a "dreamy lullaby, where she ponders whether she'll be appreciated after a lover stops calling her name."[five] Edna Gundersen from USA Today praised the rail, referring to it every bit an "instant and enchanting classic, where Keys simply dazzles, demonstrating her lock on the futurity regardless of the industry'due south fate."[vi] Stephanie Merrit from The Observer chosen it a "sweet, caramel-shine track."[7]

Nick Levine wrote for Digital Spy a very positive review, writing that it is "a smoochy, seductive soul carol, built around a delicate, Oriental-sounding piano riff, information technology gives Keys enough of chance to evidence off her breathy, Mariah-esque upper annals. Best of all, like all Keys' about impressive moments, its tune has a timeless quality that allows it to transcend its modish R&B production."[8]

Commercial operation [edit]

"Like You'll Never See Me Over again" debuted at number 37 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs as the Hot Shot debut of the calendar week, jumping to number 22 in its second calendar week, number fifteen in its 3rd week, and to and then number 9 in its fourth. Afterward climbing to number three in its fifth week, the vocal reached number two in its sixth week, and and then rose to number one in its ninth week, beating off Keys' own song "No One"; this made Keys the 2nd artist since the R&B chart began using Nielsen SoundScan information in 1992 to succeed herself at number one, equally "Like Y'all'll Never See Me Again" jumped from number two to number 1 and traded places with "No One", which had topped the nautical chart for x weeks. Rapper Nelly accomplished this feat in 2002 with "Hot in Herre" and "Dilemma".[ix] The vocal spent seven weeks atop the chart, after which information technology remained at number ii for half dozen weeks thereafter. As of the charting week of September 13, 2008, "Like Y'all'll Never See Me Once again" has remained on the chart for 45 consecutive weeks, all of them inside the top 50. Additionally, the vocal topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs year-end nautical chart of 2008.[ten] On the Billboard Hot 100, it debuted at number 93, jumped to number 45 in its second week, and subsequently peaked at number 12.

"Like You lot'll Never See Me Again" was released on February 25, 2008, in the United Kingdom, peaking at number 53 on the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland Singles Chart. In Australia, it debuted and peaked at number 77 on the ARIA Singles Nautical chart, number 44 on the Concrete Singles Nautical chart, and number nineteen on the Urban Singles Chart the week of April 14, 2008.

Music video [edit]

The music video for "Similar You'll Never Encounter Me Again", directed by Diane Martel, features cameos past Common (with whom Keys had previously worked with in the 2007 move picture show Smokin' Aces) as Keys' love interest who is critically injured in a motorbike accident and Keys' mother Terri Augello equally a infirmary medic. It tells the story backwards, and the viewer learns that the couple had been arguing. The video premiered on November 13, 2007, on MTV's Total Request Live and BET's 106 & Park. Information technology debuted at number two on VH1's VSpot Top 20 Countdown on February 23, 2008. Keys described the video as "heart-wrenching. If your heart doesn't feel me, then y'all are expressionless!".[two]
